Neurology Primer: Mirror Neurons in Rehabilitation

Presented by: Dr. Matthew Worth

The mirror neuron system (MNs), when applied correctly is a very powerful tool for neurorehabilitation.  Many clinicians have seen applications involving mirror neurons, but less have a full understanding of the MNs or are aware of its full capacity for creating powerful changes in our patients. This program is for those looking to fully understand the mirror neuron networks and to learn contemporary models in neurorehabilitation of the sensorimotor system, limbic and pain modulation systems.

Topics Covered

  1. Mirror Neuron Physiology
  • Discovery
    • Development
    • Current accepted theories

 2. Recognized mirror neurons system (MNS) circuitry and functionality

  • Inferior frontal gyrus (IFG)
  • Premotor cortex (PMC)
  • Superior parietal lobule (SPL)
  • Rostral inferior parietal lobule (IPL)
  • Mirror neuron systems and self-mapping
  • Fronto-parietal mirror neuron system modeling

3. Accepted functions of the MNS

    • Understanding intentions
    • Empathy
    • Learning facilitation
    • Automatic imitation
    • Motor mimicry
    •

4. Proposed pathophysiology within the MNS in various conditions:

    • Autism
    • Psychiatric disorders
    • Post-Stroke
    • Language disorders
    • Social cognition
    • Empathy

5. Cognitive/higher functions in:

      • ALS
      • Parkinson’s Ds
      • Frontotemporal dementia
      • Alzheimer’s Ds

What You Will Learn

  • Evidence-based rehabilitation utilizing the mirror neuron system (MNS)
    • Autism
    • Stroke
    • Social cognition
    • Developmental Coordination Disorder
    • Parkinson’s Disease
    • Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
    • Aphasia
    • Dysphagia
    • Visual feedback for Upper extremity rehabilitation
    • Imitation/Mirror/Mirror box therapy
    • The effects of exercise on the mirror neuron system (MNS)
    • Disadvantages of utilizing the mirror neuron system (MNS)

Who is this program for?

Licensed medical professionals who seek advanced applications in the rehabilitation of patients suffering stroke, movement disorders, Parkinson’s Disease, phantom limb pain, Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS I & II), Autism (ASD), dysphagia, Development Coordination Disorder (DCC), and psychiatric disorders. Including, but not limited to: physical therapists (PT), physical therapy assistants (PTA), occupational therapist (OTR), occupational therapy assistants (OTA), physicians and physician assistants (PTA), and nurse practitioners (NP).
