Neurology Primer: Application of HBOT in Functional Neurology
Presented by: Dr. Jason Sonners
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is an incredible modality that can help so many patients, but it is also not well understood and underutilized by clinicians. This program aims to remedy that! This 2-day event will teach you what you need to know about the science and physiology of HBOT but overlay that with the information you need to support the conditions that functional neurology clinicians work with.
Participants should be able to describe the philosophies of the physics, physiology, pathophysiology, and the health-related aspects/concerns of compressing patients and observers within the hyperbaric environment, ensuring safe treatment protocol. By the end of this course, the student should be able to identify Decompression Illness, Oxygen Toxicity and understand the CMS-approved indications where Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has proven useful along with the most common off-label indications where HBOT application is appropriate. Students will also master the hyperbaric mechanisms of action and understand the application of HBOT for other off-label indications. Additionally, the student shall determine proper course of action given a particular symptom which improves overall patient outcomes and decreases the professional practice gaps identified for this activity. Students should also be able to identify the proper controlling actions for recompression chamber emergencies and discuss other illnesses which can be treated in a chamber along with protocols used for HBOT. The students will understand oxygen as a nutrient and as a drug, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, contraindications (relative and absolute), and adverse reactions to hyperbaric therapy.
